The Alberta, Canada oil sands proposal is coming under criticism for BP s [NYSE:BP] plan to increase pollution in the Great Lakes. Oil from the oil sands is heavier and requires more refining than most crude. BP plans to dump 50% more ammonia and 35% more suspended solids into Lake Michigan from its Whiting, Ind., refinery in order to process the oil. Indiana officials say the refinery is needed to support the local economy, and the pollution increase is still only half of what federal law allows.
