The Open Patent Alliance for WiMAX IP - A Potentially Good Thing

Intel started the Open Patent Alliance (OPA) as yet another way to drive the WiMAX ecosystem forward. The initial members include Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Clearwire, Intel, Samsung, and Sprint. Is this meaningful? Yes, but not yet. This is a step in the right direction and there are some heavy patent holders here, but it needs more heavy patent holders. I am confident it wll gain more members over time, but certainly will not have all the important relevant companies as far as WiMAX-related IP. ABI will be watching the OPA over the next year or two to see how many more members it can...
